PASQUOTANK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) - Deputies uncovered an illegal cat rescue after a tip came in to the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday.

Sheriff Randy Cartwright with the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office said the illegal rescue was found in a rented building in the 1900 block of Nixonton Road. Upon entering the building, between 70 and 80 cats were found.

The cats were housed there by a couple now living in Chowan County, Cartwright said.

At this time, the sheriff’s office is working alongside the SPCA and the District Attorney’s Office to relocate the cats.

" We're accepting donations, monetary donations also, and these cats are available for adoption and we're looking to get them into forever homes," Sabrenna Protain with the SPCA said.

When the investigation is complete, the District Attorney’s Office will determine what charges can be pursued.
