WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - A white Christmas arrived early in Williamsburg this year, as winter weather moved into the area late Friday night into Saturday. As the sun set Saturday night, snow started falling steadily, accumulating quickly on the ground that was both cold and dry.

"Kids love it and everything," smiled William Townsend, visiting Williamsburg from his home in New Kent. "As long as it gets colder and more snow comes, I'm not complaining."

Saturday's snowfall added to Friday's. In places, there was still an inch or two of snow on the ground when it started coming down again. It's the sort of weather that makes this time of year even better for Townsend.

"What do you think about Christmas time? You think about snow," answered Townsend.

But for drivers, snow makes things much worse, dusting the streets with enough slick snow to make things dangerous. Drivers slowed down for safety on major roads, as their cars left tire marks in the freshly fallen snow.

Freezing temperatures could make things even worse as wet roads turn to frozen roads, and the threat of black ice comes up. VDOT warned drivers to stay home if they can.

But even with the warning, the year's first snowfall in the region was too much of a draw to keep everyone at home. And with about an inch or more of snow on the ground in some places, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Williamsburg.
