FRANKLIN, Va. (WAVY) - The release of dozens of dangerous exotic species from an Ohio farm has raised questions about wildlife legislation in other states.
It is illegal to possess wildlife without a permit in the state of Virginia. According to state law, wildlife permits are not issued for personal use, including housing wildlife as pets.
However, you can own reptiles and amphibians, such as turtles, snakes and frogs, for personal use, but the limit is five of each species
There are some species that slip through the cracks. In Virginia, there is no mention of wolf hybrids or primates.
One local zoo owner told WAVY.com Virginia needs stronger legislation when it comes to exotic species. Debbie Jeter, of the Bear Path Acres Zoo in Franklin said seeing animals on the loose in Ohio really hit home.
"I called the Cincinnati Zoo and informed them we would be willing to help in assistance and placement of the animals," Jeter said.
She explained regulation of exotic species in Ohio is among the most lenient in the country. Jeter houses many of the same species that escaped the Ohio farm.
In Virginia, the U.S. Department of Agriculture APHIS Animal Care Program issues permits for exhibitors, such as zoos.
In some cases, animals that are legal to own under Virginia law could be banned by a local ordinance.
