VSP step up enforcement for Labor Day

HAMPTON ROADS ( WAVY) - Virginia State Police (VSP) are stepping up enforcement for the Labor Day holiday weekend.

According to VSP, drivers can expect to see 75% of the State Police's uniformed workforce on patrol.

On Thursday, state police joined Governor Bob McDonnell, the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP), and local law enforcement to kick off Virginia's annual 'Checkpoint Strikeforce' campaign, which combines increased enforcement efforts with proactive education against drunk driving.

"In just the past two months, drunk drivers have struck and injured four state police troopers," said Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent.

In addition to the drunk driving checkpoints, VSP will engage in another campaign, Operation C.A.R.E., to reduce crashes, fatalities, and injuries caused by impaired driving, speeding, and failure to wear seat belts.
