VDOT: New contracts on hold

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The Virginia Department of Transportation has placed new subcontractor contracts on hold until an investigation into the pothole fiasco has completed.

Aubrey Layne with the Commonwealth Transportation Board told WAVY.com he has proposed a resolution requiring VDOT Commissioner Greg Whirley to report back to the CTB in March before approving any maintenance contracts, including TME Enterprises.

Whirley has said he will not be approving any new contracts until at least Friday, when an investigation into pothole-laden Interstate 264 eastbound is complete.

"This is another reminder to Mr. Whirley that he is not to sign off on any contract until he briefs us in March," Layne told 10 On Your Side.

Layne also said the contractor should be held responsible for the flat tires and damage some drivers sustained.

"At the end of the day, even though we have a third party looking at it, we should make sure the appropriate thing is done," Layne said.

TME is being investigated in Norfolk and Chesapeake for allegedly illegally dumping concrete and other items into city stormwater systems. Their contract with VDOT is due to be resigned this spring.
