Wind knocks out power for 15K customers

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Officials say power was knocked out for 15,000 Virginia Beach residents Wednesday when a tree fell on a transmission line.

According to Bonita Harris with Dominion Virginia Power, high winds caused a large tree to fall atop a transmission line near the intersection of Northampton Boulevard and Bayside Drive just before 4 p.m.

Areas affected include Stratford, Shore Drive and Independence Boulevard.

According to Dominion's online outage map, between 1,000 and 2,500 customers in the area were still out of power at 10:30 p.m.

Bayside Library closed at 5 p.m. after it lost power. The Bayside Recreation Center is expected to close at 6 p.m. if power isn't restored by then.

Dominion aims to have all service restored by 10 a.m. Thursday.

Additionally, 5,000 customers were without power in the Gloucester area.

Suffolk's Main Street was closed in both directions due to high water.
