VB, VDOT crews treating icy roads

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Department of Transportation and local Public Works crews are keeping a close eye on the roads as a wintry mix moves through Hampton Roads.

Some drivers tell WAVY.com they are concerned the pothole repairs on Interstate 264 will worsen after the weather system moves through. VDOT contractors have worked for the last eight days to repair potholes on the interstates.

"We'll have more potholes, " driver Marlisa Bush said. "We will definitely have more potholes."

"A couple of the roads on my side of town are fixed already," driver Giselle Riveria said. "It seems good on my side. I don't know about everybody else."

VDOT officials say they feel confident those repairs will withstand the storm. Saturday night, VDOT and TME Enterprise crews treated interstates and primary roads with a salt, sand mixture. TME officials tell WAVY.com they plan to have 30 trucks treating roads, with 70 employees.

Local Public Works crews also plan to be working throughout the night on Saturday to treat the slick, rainy roads. Virginia Beach Public Works spokesperson Drew Lankford says eight crews are monitoring
road conditions throughout the night, and law enforcement is helping by keeping an eye out for black ice.

"Police are out doing a great job monitoring the roads. We have one crew out monitoring for places we have trouble," Lankford said. "The temperatures are going to drop throughout the night."

Lankford says there are 12 crews on stand-by to treat freezing roads overnight. Virginia Beach 'Frost Patrol' crews treated the ramps, bridge, and overpasses starting at 4 p.m. Saturday.

They will treat those fixtures again Sunday morning.
