VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The mission of a summit in Virginia Beach Saturday was to motivate young African American men on their journey to success.
WAVY News’ Don Roberts was on hand to speak at the event and delivered his message with a rap.
Hundreds of students sat in the audience at Landstown High School for the summit entitled “Becoming a Drum Major for Change.” Every year, the program is held around the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to commemorate his civil rights achievements.
“It originally started in response to the school division’s efforts to increase the achievement of African American males in particular, and as a result, the summit has grown to where we now have citywide participation,” Dr. Esther Monclova-Johnson told WAVY.com.
This was the sixth year the summit has been held in Virginia Beach.
