Student brings bullets to VB elementary

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Beach school officials said a child brought bullets to Woodstock Elementary School Thursday.

According to a message sent to parents and obtained by WAVY.com, the child brought two small-caliber bullets to school.

“Please understand that at NO time was anyone in danger and there was NO weapon on school property,” the message said.

Discipline guidelines have been followed, though it is unclear what those guidelines are.

“We urge you to use this as a ‘teachable moment’ and talk with your children about the importance of doing their part to keep our schools safe,” the message continued.

A school spokeswoman told WAVY.com the student went hunting with his father earlier in the week and left the bullets in a coat pocket. At some point, the child switched jackets and mistakenly brought the bullets to school. The bullets were recovered, and a school security officer disposed of them safely.

The spokeswoman said the child had no malicious intent at all.

Since no one at the school was in any danger, administrators "agonized" with the decision to send out the alert message, the spokeswoman said. Due to the climate after the school shootings in Newtown, Conn., staff decided to err on the side of caution and alert parents.
