Red flags warn of strong rip currents

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Red flags are flying at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, warning beach goers of strong rip currents.

Tropical Storm Leslie is churning up massive waves.

The warnings have been posted since the weekend. Police and lifeguards searched for a surfer who disappeared in the water Saturday. He was found safe.

Ryan Steil was in the water surfing and said the currents were very strong. "Some good rip currents. The current's pretty heavy to the north. If you're not an experienced swimmer, it's definitely not a good idea to be out," advised Steil.

The Virginia Beach lifesaving service reduced its lifeguard staff after Labor Day and will have patrols only starting September 17, according to Capt. Tom Gill, Deputy Chief of Lifesaving Service.

Croatan, Sandbridge and the North End of the beach are not staffed by lifeguards now.
