VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A pregnant woman and a man were injured in a two-alarm fire at the Linkhorn Bay apartment complex in Virginia Beach early Sunday morning.
The woman, who is five-and-a-half-months pregnant, suffered burn injuries that covered 40 percent of her body. She was taken to a local hospital where she is listed in critical condition.
The injured man broke his leg when he jumped from the second floor to escape the flames. He was also taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Crews were called to the Linkhorn Bay Apartments in the 500 block of Pinesong Lane just after 3 a.m. for a two-alarm fire.
Wind conditions rapidly spread the fire and firefighters had to evacuated the apartment building at one point to attack the blaze. Fire officials say the fire was started accidentally by discarded smoking material on a second floor balcony .
The fire affected 12 apartments.
Red Cross officials are on the scene helping those who were displaced.
