VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - An officer sustained minor injuries after being pinned in his vehicle Monday afternoon.
Grazia Moyers with Virginia Beach Police confirms the officer's car flipped over, and the officer was pinned inside the car.
Essie Lindsey heard the accident happening and rushed out of work to see what happened.
"We heard something like a gun shot and the next thing I knew I saw police officers everywhere," Lindsey said. "Everything happened so quickly."
Police say the officer was on his way to robbery call, with his lights on and siren blaring. Lindsey said she remembers there was a heavy downpour during the time the accident happened.
The officer was driving on north Newtown Road when he lost control and flipped his car. He was trapped inside while crews worked to free him. The rescue took 40 minutes, and the officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
"I'm ecstatic that he is okay," Lindsey said. "We need him out here protecting us."
Moyers says serious injuries were prevented because the officer was wearing a seatbelt.
