VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The Virginia Beach Department of Public Health lifted the swimming and wading advisory issued between 8th Street and Aqua Lane .
The advisory was issued on May 31 because bacteria levels in the water exceeded the State Water Quality Standards.
Coastal waters are tested weekly for indicator organisms such as Enterococcus, which are a group of organisms used to determine the extent of the fecal contamination.
"We encourage the public to protect their health by complying with this advisory," said Venita Newby-Owens, M.D., Director of the Virginia Beach Department of Public Health. "Typically an advisory of this nature is temporary and will be withdrawn once the bacteria levels have returned to safe levels."
The signs have been removed that alerted the public of the advisory.
