VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - There's good news and bad news about shellfish harvesting in the Lynnhaven River.

The Virginia Department of Health is opening new areas in Linkhorn Bay to direct shellfish harvesting.

But other areas will be closed because of elevated bacteria levels. These areas are centered mostly in the river's Eastern Branch.

In all, about 121 acres of oyster and clam grounds will be lost.

Lynnhaven River Now executive director Karen Forget tells The Virginian-Pilot that at least one oyster farmer will have to move his operations.
