Large VB brush fire contained

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Fire officials say a brush fire burning in Virginia Beach has been contained, and the rain should help fire crews declare the fire completely out.

The fire is located off Atwoodtown Road and Artesia Way and is heading toward two creeks inside a wildlife refuge. Crews said due to its path toward two creeks, they let the fire keep burning through Tuesday night.

According to Tim Riley with the Virginia Beach Fire Department, members from Back Bay wildlife and fisheries are working to extinguish the remaining smoldering spots. Rain Wednesday afternoon should keep the fire from flaring up.

The fire was called in at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday and there have been no reported injuries. No actual structures were in danger, according to Riley.

Riley said the area is swampy and remote, and crews used all-terrain vehicles to gain direct access to the fire Tuesday evening.

According to Chopper 10 pilot Steve Decker, fire trucks were about a mile away from the fire.

Riley says the department had four brush trucks, three engines, one tanker and one ladder truck on scene.

The department used Nightingale, which usually flies patients to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, above the scene of the fire Tuesday. Firefighters say the crews in the medical helicopter helped them with aerial observations because the Virginia Beach Police Department's helicopter was not working at the time.
