VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Beach fire crews rescued the family pets after a fire sparked in a kitchen Friday evening.

Battalion Chief James Ramsey with the Virginia Beach Fire Department said firefighters were called the 5500 block of Rutledge Road around 7:25 p.m. An accidental fire sparked in the home’s kitchen and the fire was under control 20 minutes later.

Four children and two adults have been displaced because of the fire and the red cross has been called. Ramsey said fire crews rescued two cats and one dog.

The home had working smoke detectors, which alerted the family to the fire. The home suffered heavy fire damage in the kitchen and smoke damage throughout the rest of the home.
