VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Officials say one person died in a Wednesday evening house fire in Virginia Beach.
According to Chief Patrick Humphries with the Virginia Beach Fire Department, crews responded to a home in the 500 block of Prince of Wales Drive early Wednesday evening.
The victim has been identified as 67-year-old Hannah J. Brandon.
"There were flames shooting out of the back of the house," neighbor Kristen Marshall said.
Crews performed a defensive attack, according to Humphries, and one firefighter was injured. He is expected to be okay.
Neighbor Carol Whitman said she was asked by police to leave her home during the height of the fire.
"The flames were just enormous," Whitman said. "They were just bursting through the roof of the house."
Humphries said the cause remains under investigation.
