VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Crews battled a fire at a condominium development at 11th Street and Pacific Avenue near the Virginia Beach Oceanfront late Friday night.
Firefighters received a call for structure fire at 10:48 p.m. When they arrived on the scene they found heavy fire coming from the balcony of a third-story condo, according to Chief Ken Pravetz with the Virginia Beach Fire Department.
The fire was brought under control in about an hour.
Pravetz told WAVY.com one firefighter suffered a minor burn injury on his arm and was treated and released from the hospital. There were no other injuries reported.
Nine units at the complex were damaged and 12 people were displaced by the fire.
Fire investigators determined that the fire was started by improperly discarded smoking material.
Battalion Chief Tim Riley says there have been 17 fires in Virginia Beach attributed to improperly discarded smoking material so far this year.
