Crash victim unhappy with Navy cleanup

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Two weeks ago Friday, Mayfair Mews residents returned to their apartments after living out of boxes following the NAS Oceana jet crash.

One of those residents is upset the way his apartment was left after the Navy processed it following the crash.

Jeff Swope doesn't want to blame anyone. He just wants his apartment cleaned like the others were in Mayfair Mews.

He claims he doesn't have the money to cover the cost to clean up the apartment, and claims his apartment is in worse shape than before the F-A/18 crash that sent him to a hotel room.

"It wasn't OK" says Jeff Swope. The Mayfair Mews resident claims his apartment was not properly cleaned after the Oceana Jet crash on Good Friday April 6th. The windows were open at the time, and thick black smoky air came through the screens.

37 units were not destroyed in the crash. The Navy said all the carpets were cleaned. We were with Marge Hovancik when she returned to her apartment and the carpets were cleaned. Neighbors all around Swope have professionally cleaned carpets. As Swope pulls back the rug, he claims it shows how the carpet not under the rug was still dirty.

He has a fax from the Navy's lawyer, the Judge Advocate General who wrote to Swope he needs to itemize receipts of payments or repairs, or itemize written estimates. Swope has already $1,800 worthof expenses.

Swope even took before and after pictures, and you can run your fingers across the sliding screen door and black stuff comes off on your fingers.

"I can understand a stain here and there. I can understand this stuff. It's not like I'm frustrated, but I don't like the way I've been treated about this. I didn't do this mess."
