VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Fortune 500 company Amerigroup, based in Virginia Beach, is being bought out by WellPoint.

The $4.9 billion sale was the top private merger of Medicaid benefits in the country. Amerigroup employs 2,300 people in Virginia Beach.

CEO Jim Carlson told WAVY.com the move is positive.

"We believe this partnership will create tremendous growth opportunities for our employees and allow us to contribute even more meaningfully to the economic well-being of Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth of Virginia," Carlson said.
