NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A 13-year-old died and a 15-year-old was wounded in a double shooting in the East End of Newport News late Sunday afternoon.
Newport News police spokesman Lou Thurston said officers responded to the shooting at 4:19 p.m. near the corner of 31st Street and Orcutt Avenue. They arrived to find a 13-year-old Hampton male dead from a gunshot wound to the back and a 15-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm.
The 13-year-old has been identified as Lamonee Johnson-Chisholm of Newport News.
10 On Your Side spoke to the 15-year-old victim's mother. She says her son is at home recovering, but is devastated about the loss of his best friend.
The 15-year-old's mother told WAVY.com the boys were at a nearby corner store when her son says three teens started shooting at them.
Thurston says detectives are following up on information they gathered at the scene to find the suspect or suspects in the shooting. "We're looking at some different theories I guess. We don't have anything really definitive at this point."
Thurston said the shootings happened at a different location from where the teens were found. He had no word on suspects, and the investigation continues. Police ask anyone with information to call Newport News Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
The teen's death marked the City's 18th homicide of the year.
