Teen issued summons for crash that killed veterinarian

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - Chesapeake Police officers issued a summons for reckless driving against the teenage driver involved in an accident on Nov. 15 that killed a prominent community veterinarian.

Chesapeake Police spokeswoman Kelly O’Sullivan said a summons for reckless driving by driving a vehicle not under proper control was served Sunday on 18-year-old Lauralee Moose. O'Sullivan added speed, alcohol or use of a telephone while driving were not factors in the crash.

WAVY.com asked O'Sullivan why Moose was charged with reckless driving if speed, alcohol or use of a telephone were not factors in the crash. O'Sullivan said investigators determined Moose crossed the line and hit Dr. MacQueen's vehicle.

She added what caused Moose to cross the line has not been specified at this time. 

Moose and a 15-year-old passenger were in an Isuzu Rodeo going north in the 2300 block of Shillelagh Road just before 8:30 a.m. when the Rodeo struck a Chrysler minivan driven by Ruth Ann MacQueen, 59, of the 2200 block of Shillelagh Road, according to police.

MacQueen, who died at the scene, owned Midway Veterinary Hospital on South Military Highway.

Medics took Moose and her passenger to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where they were treated and released.

Funeral plans for MacQueen have not been released. Her husband, Roger Pope, told WAVY.com that donations could be sent to the "Dizzy Fund" at Midway Veterinary Hospital, which helps people who cannot afford treatment for their pets.
