SURRY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - A dog shot in the snout last weekend is back home with her owner, but it is still unknown who shot the Dutch German Shepherd.
Kristin Kessinger, Leah's owner, said she let her dog out Sunday off Rolfe Highway. Later that afternoon, Kessinger said she got a call from a neighbor that her dog was shot.
"My heart just dropped as soon as she had been shot," Kessinger added. "She's one of the nicest animals in the world. There's nothing mean in her."
Leah was left wounded on the doorstep of a Dogs Deserve Better worker Sunday in Surry County. The man brought Leah, who was shot in the snout, to Roger’s Veterinary Hospital in Smithfield.
"The bullet traveled down and there are bullet fragments all down though her nose and through her neck," Kessinger said. "When you hear of a person or an animal being shot point blank in the face, you automatically think they didn't survive."
Kessinger said losing Leah would have been like losing a family member.
For Kessinger, it's even more troubling not knowing who shot Leah.
"It just terrifies me because, I know that she had to have been shot somewhere in the area," Kessinger said.
She said she will be building a fence around her home to prevent this from happening again.
The Surry County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case.
