SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A woman injured in a crash two days before Christmas has passed away, according to officials.
Diana Klink with the City of Suffolk told WAVY.com officers responded to the 400 block of Cypress Chapel Road on Dec. 23 for a report of a crash at 3 p.m. There, they found a 2012 Toyota Corolla driven by Cassandra Conner, 68, of Suffolk struck a ditch after running off the roadway.
Conner’s vehicle suffered moderate damage to the driver’s side. Klink said witnesses told police Conner’s vehicle was traveling slowly prior to the crash. When medics arrived on scene, they discovered Conner’s blood sugar was low enough to have led to her being impaired and caused the crash.
She was transported to Sentara Obici Hospital but was diverted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Klink said.
On Jan. 10, the State Medical Examiner called police to let them know Conner died at the hospital. Conner’s husband said Conner passed away during surgery and suffered severe blood sugar lows even after eating.
“It was determined that the injuries she sustained in the crash were exacerbated by her existing medical condition,” Klink said.
