Nansemond still unsafe for shellfish

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The Nansemond River is still unsafe for shellfish harvesting, according to the Health Department.

Water samples showed pollutant levels in the river are still too high to lift the ban on shellfishing.

The Health Department is lifting the ban in the Lynnhaven Watershed, and in areas of the James River the James River Bridge to the mouth of the Nansemond by Monday.

This all stems from millions of gallons of raw sewage spilling into local waterways when a pipe burst off Wilroy Road in Suffolk.
