Fund established for Officer Winslow

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The Suffolk Police Officers Association has set up a fund for an officer critically injured in the line of duty .

Police say Officer James Winslow and was left unconscious in the woods in the 1000 block of Nansemond Parkway near Portsmouth Boulevard after an assault by 43-year-old Joseph Staton.

Donations will be used to assist Officer Winslow and his family during what will be a long recuperation, according to police.

Anyone who wants to send a check, is asked to write "Officer James Winslow" on the memo line of the check.

Donations will also be accepted in person at the Monarch Bank on Corporate Lane in Suffolk.

Officer Winslow has been on the force for two and a half years.

Police say Staton, of Portsmouth, is charged with malicious wounding of a police officer, aggravated malicious wounding; shooting, stabbing, cutting or wounding; grand larceny of a police radio; possession of stolen vehicle; burglary; and third offense petit larceny for taking clothing from a residence.
