Chem lab mistake sends one to hospital

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - An accident inside a local high school’s chemistry class sent one student to the hospital Monday morning.

Diana Klink with the City of Suffolk said Suffolk Fire and Rescue crews were dispatched to Lakeland High School located at 214 Kenyon Road just before 10 a.m. for a report of a student combining bleach and ammonia.

As a result of the mixture, Chloramin was released into the classroom. Windows were opened and students were taken out of the room. Klink said a fan was also placed in the room.

Five students and one teacher’s assistant complained of exposure and one student was transported by ground to Sentara Obici Hospital. The remaining students and assistant were treated at the scene.

The classroom has been closed for the remainder of the day. Klink said the parents of all students affected by the vapors were notified of the incident.

The scene was cleared around noon.
