NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A Newport News mother told WAVY.com she was not contacted when her son was taken by a school bus to the wrong school.
Malorie's 6-year-old son was starting a before school program at Greenwood Elementary Monday morning. Malorie says her son somehow got on a school bus with other students bound for Lee Hall Elementary School, where he ate breakfast and then told a cafeteria worker he was in the wrong school.
Malorie says she was not contacted by school officials that day. Instead, an administrator from Lee Hall drove her son back to Greenwood.
"I was pretty upset," she said. "I'm not even sure they're allowed to take students home in private vehicles. I don't think so without the parent's permission."
Malorie got a call from a principal apologizing for not calling to tell her about this.
"I'm glad he told me," Malorie said. "[My son] thought he was on a little field trip."
Tammy Jordan, administrator of recreation programs with Newport News Parks and Recreation, released the following statement to WAVY.com:
"We deeply regret that this situation occurred. We are thoroughly investigating this incident to determine exactly how it happened and what steps we can take to ensure that this does not happen in the future."
"It was an honest mistake but it needs to not happen. Definitely not cause its a scary world these days," Malorie said.
