Parksley fire confirmed as arson

ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - Crews responded to a structure fire at approximately 10 p.m. Monday in Parksley.  Sgt. Michelle Anaya with Virginia State Police confirms arson is suspected.

Anaya says the fire was called in just before 10 p.m. at 19190 Greenbush Road.  An abandoned two-story, wood frame house was fully engulfed when crews arrived on scene.  No injuries were reported.

More than 70 structures have been set on fire on the Eastern Shore since mid-November.  Firefighters are growing weary and stressed after fighting the intentionally set fires nearly every night.

Many Eastern Shore residents have set up locations to drop off donations for the firefighters, troopers, and deputies working the case.

They need coffee creamer and sugar, coffee cups, hot chocolate, water, Gatorade and more.

• Highway Market in New Church
• Pocomoke Animal Hospital
• Contours Express in Exmore
• Tangled Salon in Exmore

As firefighters and investigators continue to fight the fires, members of the community plan to gather Tuesday night in Onley. 

Rev. Steve Jones with Shore Presbyterian Church says there will be a prayer vigil at Nandua High School's auditorium Tuesday.  Jones tells WAVY.com, church leaders are concerned for the community, the victims, and the firefighters.  He says they are also concerned for the arsonist, or arsonists, themselves.

Jones says they began planning the vigil on Thursday and they've made an effort to reach out to every church and denomination in Accomack County.  He believes there will be a true representation of the community as a whole at the vigil.
