Storms bring tornado warning, flooding

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Storms Saturday morning brought a tornado warning and caused widespread flooding in Newport News and Hampton.

A tornado warning issued for Portsmouth and Norfolk expired around 10:40 a.m. with no reports of damage.

The storms caused major flooding in Newport News and Hampton. Newport News police are urging people to stay off the roads because the rain is causing hazardous driving conditions. The area of Normandy Lane and Church Road is impassable due to flooding.

A spokeswoman from Newport News police told WAVY. com that the Great Oak Home for the Elderly is being evacuated due to the flooding. The Meridian Parkside Apartments off Hampton Roads Center Parkway are also being evacuated. Buses are being provided for temporary shelter for those affected.

Two apartment complexes in Hampton have also been evacuated due to flooding. Fire crews went to the Paula Maria Complex and Century Plaza with boats to help evacuate residents.

Newport News and Hampton have set up a temporary shelters to assist residents affected by the flooding. Newport News has set up a shelter at the Midtown Community Center at 570 McLawhorne Drive. Officials are setting up a shelter at Warwick High School, although that shelter has not opened yet. Hampton's Shelter is at Eaton Middle School at 2108 Cunningham Drive, according to a city spokeswoman.

Newport News police say that calls for service are being prioritized because man power for fire and rescue personnel are limited. They are asking for the public's patience as crews try to reach the most heavily affected areas.

No injuries have been reported.
