HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - A fierce summer storm whipped through the area Thursday afternoon. Many areas in Virginia Beach and Hampton experienced flash flooding, extremely high winds and lots of lightning. Super Doppler 10 Meteorologist Jon Cash said there were tens of thousands of lightning strikes throughout the area. There were even confirmed reports of a funnel cloud spotted over Virginia Beach.
Fires, downed power lines and fallen trees wreaked havoc in several parts of the viewing area ( see viewer submitted photos ).
Hundreds lost power in the metro area due to the storm. Power was restored to most by late Friday afternoon. Those in the Richmond area were not so lucky. Thousands lost power due to the storm. It was not until late Friday that power was fully restored.
The roads started draining shortly after the rain stopped and there were no major flooding reports as of Friday morning. However, some ponding persisted on secondary roadways.
No injuries associated with the storm were reported.
Despite Thursday's mayhem, it was a beautiful day Friday; sunny, in the mid 80s with low humidity. A stark contrast from Thursday's severe weather.
