VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Police say they have received more than two dozen reports of men scamming young patrons of electronics stores in Virginia Beach.
Carrie Fair with the Virginia Beach Police Department says the suspects approach young shoppers at electronic stores and claim there is something wrong with their vehicle, often between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
They then ask for a ride to an auto parts store, but on the way they ask to borrow money and convince the victim to go to an ATM.
"The victim will withdraw anywhere from $100 to $400 and will give it to the suspects with the idea they need to make an immediate purchase at the [auto parts] store," Fair said.
Police say once everyone arrives at the auto parts store, the suspects promise to repay the victim but take off with the money and are never seen again.
Fair said the scam has happened more than two dozens times in the past years and usually happens before, during and after the holidays and around military paydays.
"Be very cautious who you give a ride to," Fair said.
If you have been a victim, police want you to call them at 385-5000 or if you can help them find the suspects, call the Crime Line number at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
