PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Portsmouth Fire Chief Don J. Horton resigned Wednesday after more than three years on the job.
Dana Woodson with the City of Portsmouth says Horton resigned due to family medical issues. Deputy Fire Chief Beck Barfield, who is returning from retirement, will be the interim fire chief effective immediately.
Horton, a Richmond native, was named fire chief in April 2009 after serving as fire chief in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
