PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A Portsmouth deputy unexpectedly died of a blood clot Sunday that developed after he sustained an injury in the line of duty.
Lee Cherry with the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office told WAVY.com Deputy Bill Grimsley was on his way back from working a parade in Poquoson aon Dec. 7 when he hit a rise in the road. Grimsley, 59, was thrown from his motorcycle and broke his ankle as a result.
According to Cherry, Grimsley’s wife went out for Super Bowl snacks Sunday, Feb. 3 when he called to say he couldn’t breathe. Grimsley was taken to the hospital where he later passed away from a blood clot caused by injuries in the crash.
A veteran of the sheriff’s office for more than 15 years, Grimsley was supposed to return to work next week. He is survived by his wife, daughter, son, sister and three brothers.
A heavy amount of law enforcement will attend his burial in Suffolk Thursday.
