PORTSMOUTH, Va (WAVY) - Surveillance cameras in a Georgia Walmart caught the attempted abduction of a seven-year-old girl, including footage of the second grader fighting back.
"I was just like kicking like this, trying to kick as hard as I can," Brittney Baxter told reporters.
The suspect had his hand over her mouth.
"I think I said 'Help' when I was screaming," Brittney said.
It worked. The man quickly dropped her and ran off.
Cameras outside the store caught him getting into his car.
An hour later, police arrested 25-year-old Thomas Woods, who was on parole for a manslaughter conviction.
10 On Your Side went to Safety Town in Portsmouth, where Officer Jim Martin teaches children about Stranger Danger .
"She did everything right," Martin told WAVY.com.
Martin said this is a great example for parents to show their kids. He said if a child ever finds themselves in that situation, they should act just like Brittney and scream the word fire.
"If a kid screams, people think it's just a disorderly kid, [scream] fire [and] everybody is going to look." Martin explained.
It's a lesson he said can't be taught too often.
Woods is expected to make his first court appearance Friday.
