Arrest made in Hampton shooting

Police investigate city's first homicide in 2010

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - Hampton police tell WAVY.com they've made an arrest in a shooting that left one man dead on March 19.

Phillip Michael Bryant, 22, of Hampton was arrested Sunday in connection with the shooting that happened just before 9 p.m. in the 1100 block of LaSalle Avenue last Friday.

The victim, identified as 24-year-old Johnny Mendell Avery of Hampton, was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center where he underwent treatement for multiple gunshot wounds. Doctors pronounced him dead at 10:40 a.m. Saturday.

Bryant has been charged with murder, use of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and three counts of forging public documents. He's being held at the Hampton City Jail.

Avery's death marked the City's first homicide of 2010, police said.
