Norovirus spreading across the nation

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Norovirus, a harsh stomach illness, could sweep the country much like the flu has in the past few months, according to doctors.

The Centers for Disease Control is warning Americans of a new strain of norovirus, an illness that affects 20 million people per year. 

10 On Your Side checked with local schools and hospitals Monday and found there is no significant outbreak in Hampton Roads.

"We teach them to count to 20 and then rinse the germs away," Children's Harbor Daycare teacher Jaquay Lee said.

It is a constant battle this time of year to keep hands clean and all surfaces wiped clean as well.

"This strain [of the norovirus] is a little harsher. You may get a little sicker and it may last a few more days," Chesapeake Health Director Nancy Welch said.

The strain causes severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Some are calling it a super bug because it can hang on to surfaces or food for several hours. But, unlike the flu, there is no vaccine for it.

Welch said the germs can spread through the air as well. For example, if a child gets sick in a classroom the teacher must act fast.

"You really have to try to get everyone out of the classroom or if it's in a bathroom, isolate that bathroom until you can do a good cleaning," Welch said.

Welch recommends using bleach - the only thing that will kill the bug. Don't forget to wipe down door handles, computers, telephones, or any other item you often use.

"Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands," Welch said.
