NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Hundreds of Hampton Roads residents laced up their sneakers Saturday in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Breast cancer survivors, volunteers and community members packed downtown Norfolk for a three mile walk, called Making Strides Against Breast Cancer .
The American Cancer Society hosted the event to raise funds that go toward finding a cure.
One participant told WAVY.com breast cancer changed her family forever.
"I actually came out because I have a grandmother, my mom, and my aunt, all three of them died from breast cancer, and a couple of my friends. The have some grandmothers who've died from breast cancer so taking a walk for them," said Tiffany Woodard, of Newport News.
Medical experts say more than 6,000 women in Virginia will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
Saturday's event also encouraged women to get routine screenings.
