Vigil held for teen killed walking home

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Family and friends held a candlelight vigil for a Norfolk teen who was shot and killed walking home from a football game Friday night.

David White, 19, was s hot and killed around 9:15 p.m . Friday night on Goff Street. Friends say he was walking home from the football game at Booker T. Washington High School.

More than 100 people gathered at the Ingleside intersection with candles to honor the friend they called 'Dee Boy.'

White used that intersection at Scott Street and Seay Avenue as a meeting place whenever he would get together with friends. Those friends knew he wouldn't be there to greet them Sunday. White's sister voiced the pain so many could not put into words.

"I still can't believe it," said Crissy Thompson, White's older sister. "I am just hoping he can come to me in dreams, because I need him so bad."

White was a senior at Lake Taylor High School. His family said he planned to join the Navy when he graduated in June.

"He was trying to switch his life around, but somebody had to go out there and shoot him for no reason," said White's brother.

"He was a good boy out the hood," said Chardavia Platt, White's friend. "He showed respect."

Platt was one of White's many classmates who saw him at the game, before he was killed on the walk home.

"He happened to go to that game without me, man," said one friend, speaking to a crowd at the vigil. "I told  him not to go to that game. I told him."

Thompson says this is a hard lesson learned for the neighborhood youth.

"All you little young ones who think you're high and mighty, go get a job. Stop taking stuff and go get a job," said Thompson. "Stop hurting people. It ain't worth it. It's not worth it."

Parents aren't the only ones who feel the streets aren't safe anymore. Teenagers in Ingleside say White's death has made them realize it's time to change their behavior.

"He's not in vain," shouted White's aunt. "And his name will continue to float through Ingleside."
