Victim's mother says case mismanaged

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The mother of a sex assault victim told WAVY.com she thinks police failed to get vital information from her daughter that may have prevented three other assaults in Virginia Beach two months after her daughter's rape.

Norfolk and Virginia Beach police now say the four cases are related.

"Young detectives didn't do their job right," says the mother, who chose to withhold her identity.

The mother thinks the Norfolk Police Department failed to get the proper information from her daughter after she was sexually assaulted in April.

WAVY.com spoke to the victim in June.

"He told me to go to my room, and he held the knife up to my neck the whole time as we were walking to my room, and he had his hand over my mouth," the victim said.

She had detailed information of her attacker because he assaulted her for 45 minutes.

"She told police about the grim reaper tattoo he had on his arm... she had a lot of information to identify him," the victim's mother said.

The mother claims police did not efficiently put together a composite based on that detailed information and did not send out a composite drawing to the media,

"I think it was ridiculous the way police handled this," said the mother.

Two months after her daughter was raped, the same man who allegedly attacked her daughter attacked three other women in Virginia Beach.

Police say 26-year-old Roy Loredo is responsible for those attacks. When the Norfolk victim saw Loredo's photo when he was arrested, she knew it was the same man who had attacked her.

"My heart sunk... my heart started beating really fast and I can't believe that's him. His face just made me remember everything," the victim said.

Now, the mother and daughter say they are looking for an apology from police for not conducting the investigation properly.

"She needs a private apology from these detectives and no mother should have to go through what I went through and no mothers should have to go through it again and that's what saddens me. If police protect and serve, then do it," said the mother.

Norfolk Police had no comment on this case because it is an open investigation. Loredo refused a jailhouse interview with WAVY.com. He has been indicted in two of the cases.
