NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The mother of two young girls injured in a house fire Wednesday has been arrested and charged with child neglect.
When firefighters arrived on scene at 11:09 p.m., they believed everyone was out of the apartment on Obendorfer Road near the 1000 block of Mahone Avenue. Upon searching, crews found two girls on the second floor, ages seven and three.
The girls were unconscious and transported to a hospital. Battalion Chief Julian Williamson said they are getting better and are expected to be fine.
The girls' mother, Precious Wright was charged Thursday with two counts of felony child neglect.
A woman who identified herself as the girls' godmother said Wright was not at home at the time. Williamson said she was present at the scene when crews arrived.
According to Williamson, there was extensive fire damage on the first floor of the apartment and some smoke on the second floor. The fire was contained to the unit where it started.
