NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - In a letter sent home to parents, school officials reported an unloaded gun was found inside of a student's backpack at a Norfolk school.
The letter from Pastor Sharon Riley and Karen Reaves with the Faith Academy School of Excellence was sent Tuesday and stated the incident occurred at the end of the school day Monday.
According to the letter , a student approached a teacher that she found a gun inside of her backpack and said she did not know how it got there.
"The weapon was immediately secured without any breaches of safety or disruption to dismissal," the letter reads.
The weapon was unloaded and no one was harmed in the incident. According to the letter, the student's parent was contacted and "appropriate action" was taken.
The student's parent told administrators she accidentally placed the gun inside of her student's backpack instead of her own. She said both backpacks were in the front seat of her car.
