NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Marine-safe cement reef balls were installed in the Lafayette River to help keep the river clean and boost the oyster population.

Tommy Leggettwith the Virginia Oyster Restoration Center says each reef ball contains oyster larvae. The goal of the project is that the oysters will grow and filter the water to naturally clean it.

Members of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Elizabeth River Project say they placed 36 reef balls in the river on Thursday, and plan to put 18 more in on Friday.

"Oysters are an important to cleaning up the bay," Leggett said. "They filter huge amounts of water, nearly 50 gallons a day during the warmer months, they're good to eat of course, and they protect the shoreline."
