Records: PETA killed 1,600 animals

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Documents state Norfolk-based PETA euthanized more than 1,600 animals last year. The organization says only 25 animals were adopted in 2012.

According to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services , People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) euthanized 1,070 cats, 718 dogs and 31 other "companion animals."

PETA's Campaign Manager Danielle Katz spoke with WAVY.com about the records.

"PETA is a shelter of last resort. We take the animals nobody else will take in," Katz said. "I believe PETA adopted out 25 animals and worked with the Virginia Beach SPCA to adopt out another 150."

Justin Wilson with the Center for Consumer Freedom is fighting PETA's claims and calls the organization's acts a hypocrisy.

"PETA doesn't even have any open hours at their animal shelter," Wilson said. "Most people don't even know they run and animal shelter."

In response, PETA called the killing humane, saying there is an overpopulation crisis. Additionally, they said the Center for Consumer Freedom has an agenda.

"We're very open about the fact that we are funded by parts of the food and restaurant business for years and I think, frankly, they have a legitimate beef, if you'll excuse the pun, in having people recognize PETA is as hypocritical as they are."
