Protest prompts camping ban proposal

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Norfolk officials are proposing a ban on overnight camping on public property following a monthlong encampment in a city park by Occupy activists.

The proposed ordinance would make camping overnight on public property a misdemeanor. One-time charitable events would be exempt.

City spokeswoman Lori Crouch tells The Virginian-Pilot that a ban on camping would help clarify the law. Currently, anyone in a city park after it closes could be charged with trespassing.

Occupy Norfolk set up an encampment in a downtown park in early October after receiving a city permit. Police evicted the group on Nov. 10.

It's not clear when City Council will consider the proposed ban.
