NSU state of the university address

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Dr. Tony Atwater, president of Norfolk State University, addressed dozens of people at Wilder Center for his first state of the university speech Tuesday morning.

He said his aim is to continue a "trajectory of academic excellence" at the institution. He recalled the opening of a new library on campus plus the recent addition of a student services building and a student center. He noted the no-cost agreement for students, faculty and staff to "ride the Tide."

Dr. Atwater outlined a six year strategic plan and mission statement with goals that include modernizing facilities, and enhancing security. Plus, he announced the creation of a new Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology and a new graduate program in research.

"My goal is to take Norfolk State to a higher plane and I believe that working together with the community, we get great support from Mayor Fraim, and other constituents outside the university," Atwater said. "I think exciting things are on the way at Norfolk State."

Dr. Atwater also announced the legislative papers of the late State Senator Yvonne Miller will be housed at the university where she was a former education professor.
