RISE! program honored at White House

WASHINGTON (WAVY) - A Norfolk youth program received one of the nation's highest honors for outstanding after-school programs, during a ceremony at The White House Monday.

First Lady Michelle Obama presented the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awar d to the Crispus Attacks Cultural Center's RISE! program. RISE! stands for Rhythm in Setting Expectations. “It is so critical that we preserve arts education in our schools –because we know how important it is for our children’s development,” said Mrs. Obama.

The prestigious award is granted to 12 outstanding programs in the United States each year, that expand horizons, change lives and help young people fulfill their dreams.

RISE! was among 50 finalists and was the only finalist from Virginia. The recipients receive a $10,000 grant and a year of communications and capacity-building support from the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.
