NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Governor Bob McDonnell joined officials from Amtrak Tuesday for the inaugural ride of the first passenger rail service connecting Norfolk to East Coast cities since 1977.

“This is a historic day that will lead to new jobs, more economic development and greater transportation access in the decades to come, with the first passenger rail connection in 35 years tying together markets, businesses and tourism destinations in Norfolk, Richmond, Washington D.C. and across the entire Eastern Seaboard,” said Governor McDonnell.

The $114 million project to extend passenger rail service to Norfolk has been in the works since 2009.

The Inaugural Whistle Stop Tour will be held at the Norfolk station location at Harbor Park beginning at 2:30 p.m. The following is a list of events scheduled:

  • Kick off party with Old James River Jazz Band at 2:30 p.m.
  • First Amtrak train arrives at 3:10 p.m.
  • Mayor Paul Fraim gives welcome remarks at 3:15 p.m.
  • Train tours from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Those in attendance will have a chance to win two round-trip Amtrak Virginia tickets.

Amtrak will offer trips as far up to Boston beginning Wednesday, Dec. 12. For more information, visit amtrak.com .
