No witnesses in attempted abduction

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Norfolk Police say a teen’s story about an attempted abduction has substantial inconsistencies.

Officers with the Norfolk Police Department first heard of the alleged incident after it was reported to Oceanair Elementary School officials by the victim’s siblings Tuesday, Karen Parker-Chesson with NPD said.

When officers spoke with the three siblings, they said they were told of the attempted abduction by their mother. According to the siblings, their mother told them the incident involved their 13-year-old sister who attends Northside Middle School.

Parker-Chesson said officers then went to the middle school to interview the victim. She told police at 7:45 a.m. she was walking in the 8800 block of Tidewater Drive when a white van with tinted windows pulled up alongside her that was operated by a white male in his early 20s. At the same time, a black male walking on the sidewalk tried to grab her by the arm and she fled.

The victim said she ran to the intersection of Evans Street and Tidewater Drive where she reported the incident to a school crossing guard and both suspects left the area. The school crossing guard then allowed the victim to wait in her personal vehicle until her shift ended and then took the teen to Northside Middle School.

Officers investigated the claims and interviewed the school crossing guards assigned to the area. All guards denied any knowledge of the incident, Parker-Chesson said. No witnesses were located in the area.

When the teen was interviewed again about the incident at the scene, officers were unable to resolve “substantial inconsistencies.”

The investigation into the alleged attempted abduction is ongoing at this time. Stay with WAVY.com for more on this developing story.
