NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A Chesapeake man faces up to six years in prison for not declaring income on tax returns, according to U.S. Attorney Neil H. MacBride's office.

Thomas W. Sawyer, 43, pleaded guilty in Norfolk federal court on Aug. 7 to two counts of filing a false tax return.

According to court documents, Sawyer traveled to China to buy goods to be sold at Dollar Tree stores. While there, Sawyer, a former Dollar Tree employee, received gratuities from Chinese manufacturers and did not declare that income on his tax returns.

A press release from MacBride's office states that Sawyer failed to report in excess of $1.4 million in income and owes more than $400,000 in unpaid taxes.

Sawyer is scheduled for sentencing on Nov. 20, 2012.
